New volunteers are always welcome
The Brighton Township Volunteer Fire Department is a department rich with pride and history. Its future, and the future of all volunteer organizations, rests with you. The number of trained volunteers in many communities has grown perilously low. Unfortunately in many of today's suburban communities, people either don't have the time or simply aren't aware of local volunteer emergency services. Most of today's suburbanites were yesterday's city dwellers, and when they pick up the phone, they expect immediate service. Little do they know that each time they hear the echo of sirens through the streets, it often means another missed meal, birthday, or evening with the family for their local firefighters.
Yes, the training can be difficult, both physically and mentally. Yes, there are times when you will be faced with life or death situations. Yes, the job is dangerous and requires an individual of strong moral fiber. Yes, it requires a tremendous amount of time and dedication to eventually become a productive member of a firefighting force. However, despite all of this, the rewards far outweigh any negatives. It may be impossible to put into words what it truly means to be a firefighter. It is an incredible, life changing experience for those who have chosen to devote themselves. Unlike most other professions, and certainly unlike any other volunteer opportunity, when you become a firefighter, you become part of a brotherhood whose life spans over centuries. To make any attempt to put into writing the rewards and satisfaction one can gain from joining the fire and rescue family would certainly fall well short of its intention.
